What is a Conch Pearl? Four Things to Know about These Rare Treasures

Conch Pearls are rare and beautiful treasures that are the product of the large marine gastropod called the Queen Conch mollusk (pronounced “conk”), a large, edible sea snail. These mollusks are native to the Caribbean; they live and produce pearls in the waters near the Bahamas, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras. Four important facts to know and understand about conch pearls are explained below.

Conch Pearls are Very Rare and Classified as Non-Nacreous Pearls.

Unlike pearls made of nacre, such as Akoya, South Sea, or Tahitian pearls, conch pearls are composed of calcareous concretions of layered fibrous crystals, which gives them a beautiful porcelaneous sheen. These pearls are therefore classified as non-nacreous pearls. Conch pearls are also classified as natural pearls, because they form in an organic process whereby the Queen Conch mollusk secretes concentric layers of the fibrous crystals that wrap, over time, around an irritant in its soft mantle tissue.

Conch pearls are also very rare and cannot be cultivated. Naturally elusive, a single conch pearl is a genuine treasure. According to the Gemological Institute of America (the GIA), “the probability of finding a conch pearl is about one in a thousand,” meaning that out of a thousand Queen Conch mollusks, only one will have a pearl inside.  And fewer than ten percent of the conch pearls that are found are gem-quality. The true gem-quality, beautiful, conch pearl is exceedingly rare, and therefore, very valuable.

Given the spiral shape of the shell, conch pearls cannot easily be discovered. They become an incredible surprise when the meat is removed from the shell for eating. The genuine scarcity of conch pearls makes them highly prized, with prices that can reach exciting altitudes.

The Most Valuable Gem-Quality Conch Pearls are Pink.

Variations of Pink in Conch Pearls – Sakura Pink is the most highly prized.

Given the Barbie film and the incredible phenomenon of its world tour, pink has recently reclaimed its status as the ubiquitous color of femininity. But in the world of gem pearls, pink is anything but common. A natural pink conch pearl is an exceptional rarity that brings true delight to connoisseurs and pearl experts.

Pink toned conch pearls are, without a doubt, the most desirable. In fact, most people think of conch pearls as pink because it is the most valuable color. Conch pearls, however, can also come in a range of hues from browns to honey-colored to deep honey reds and the palest of pinks.

There are three general categories of pink hues of conch pearls, exhibiting various depths of pink – Sakura, Salmon, and Flamingo. Sakura pink is the purest pink and the most valuable. Salmon pink has more of an orange tint, and Flamingo pink has a little more red in the color. Both the lighter and the deepest darkest versions of any of these three pink shades are less desirable than the medium to medium-deep tones which are the most highly prized. All of the Assael conch pearl pieces featured here are Sakura pink in the medium/medium-deep tones.

The color palette is one of the conch pearl’s most alluring attributes. The impeccable pink hue makes a striking statement for one-of-a-kind jewelry designs. These precious gems pair beautifully with aquamarine as seen in the Assael conch pearl and aquamarine earrings. The brightness of the pink porcelaneous sheen in a conch pearl also plays well with the sparkle of diamonds. The Assael Natural Conch Pearl and Diamond ring is a terrific example.

Conch Pearls are Rarely Symmetrical in Shape.

In addition to color, size also affects the value of conch pearls with the larger sizes being beyond rare and very valuable.

In terms of shape, most gem-quality conch pearls are oval, although they occur in a variety of shapes from baroque to round, with rounds being the most valuable and infinitely rare.

Symmetry is another important value factor. Conch pearls are rarely symmetrical in shape, but the ones that do have a pleasing symmetry in their shape are the most beautiful and prized. The more symmetrical the shape, the more coveted and valuable the conch pearl.

Conch Pearls with Swirl or Flame-like Patterns are the Most Highly Prized.

The very finest of conch pearls, in rare cases, exhibit a visible, vibrant, flame-like pattern on the surface. This pattern is one of the most important determinants of value for a conch pearl (along with its color, size, and shape).  Conch pearls with this delightful burst of light, in a swirl or a flame-like pattern that attracts the eye, are the most highly prized. At auction, conch pearls with these patterns on the surface can fetch incredible prices.

The Assael Conch Pearl and Diamond ring holds one of the finest conch pearls that this 75-year heritage brand has ever offered. In addition to its large size, delicious Sakura pink hue, and  attractive shape, this natural conch pearl exhibits a remarkable porcelaneous sheen, as well as a distinctive flame-like pattern that makes it a genuine one-of-a-kind!

No matter if you are a fan or a collector, the latest conch pearl designs from Assael are fun to admire and cherish. Above all, the best thing about conch pearls is their biogenic nature. Just like cultured pearls, conch pearls need no cutting, polishing, or faceting – they are pristine and perfect just as they are! They can be worn exactly as they come from Nature. Wear them.
