Falling for Pearls: Fall 2019 Fashion Trends
The runways for Fall 2019 were awash in luster as a myriad of Haute Couture designers opted to accessorize with pearls and pearl jewelry. What fall fashion trends should you be wearing with your pearls this fall? Here are some of the top looks for autumn from the catwalks of New York, Paris, Milan and more.
Belted Suits & Coats
Whether they refer to it as “Belted Blazers” (Refinery29), “Cinched Suiting” (Elle) or “Suit Yourself” (Vogue), all fashion gurus are in agreement that blazers, suits and trench coats should be belted at the waist and have sharp shoulders for Fall 2019. English tweed, houndstooth or solid color fabrics will play a big role in such suits, and power pearls will add just the right touch of femininity to these girl-boss looks. Brock Collection featured a regal double-strand pearl necklace with its belted and fitted suit. Dolce & Gabbana paired gray houndstooth slacks with a long Tahitian pearl necklace and a newsboy/driver cap. Givenchy added mismatched dangling pearl earrings to their belted outerwear.
Volume – Feathers, Capes, Bold Earrings
This season, designer brands like Chanel, Marc Jacobs, Chloé and Celine featured bold outerwear-inspired capes and quilted overcoats to pump up the volume. Extra-large collars on blouses and dresses also added substance. Simone Rocha paired a shimmering puffy dress with a large papal collar and oversized pearl chandelier earrings. Chanel showed a winter white cape overcoat with a large pearly bib necklace and statement-making pearl drop earrings. Feathers also added a lightweight volume for Valentino, Michael Kors, Saint Laurent and Balmain. Giambattista Valli opted to add feathery volume to his latest footwear. Luckily for pearl lovers, the smoothness of pearls makes it an ideal accessory to wear with feathers and with the “lovely in lace” trend noted by Harper’s Bazaar.
Asymmetry – Necklines & Earrings
If you are a baroque pearl fan, you’ll love the trend of asymmetry. This season, designer gowns and blouses from Carolina Herrera, Badgley Mischka, Chanel and Self Portrait featured asymmetrical necklines and often single-sided or asymmetrical earrings. Prabal Gurung featured a stunning single shoulder-duster pearl drop earring, while Givenchy opted for mismatched lengths of baroque pearl drops. Baroque pearls are asymmetrical by nature. Fall’s Hot Colors – Pistachio, Lavender, Orange & Animal Print
Look for lots of knit fabrics for fall, but the hot colors of the season will be Pistachio Green, various shades of Lavender, orange and a fun array of wild animal prints. Elle magazine calls it “Millennial Purple”, a subdued yet decidedly feminine lilac hue featured at Kate Spade, Cushnie, Michael Kors and Tom Ford. For those of us who love verdant greens, a light green pistachio shade showed up all over the catwalks. Wear the purples with your Tahitian pearls and try golden or champagne pearls with the green. Orange also made quite a statement for Fall, and not just in clothing – colorful “crayon legs” stockings will be timely according to WhoWhatWear. And the herd of animal print fabrics will pair perfectly with both dark and light pearls. Dior paired choker pearl strands and baroque drop earrings with an awesome leopard hat – a wonderfully chic look.
Renaissance Period Pieces – Collars, Corsets, Pearl Embellishments
According to Elle, “the Renaissance has come to the runway.” Vintage inspirations like square necklines, corsets, puffy sleeves, ruffles and pearl embellishments influenced several of the Autumn/Winter 2019 ready-to-wear collections. Adaem and Emilia Wickstead opted for darker iterations, pairing the black fabrics with the shimmer and luster of pearls at the lobe and high on the collarbone. Dolce & Gabbana covered ruffles with layers of pearls. However you wear these nods to yester-year, be sure to keep the overall look fresh. Designer Dion Lee opted to uncover the corset while juxtaposing the exposed skin with a demure vibe of opera-length gloves. That open neckline begs for an important pearl strand or a lustrous pearl pendant.
With the many fabulous colors and fabrics of Fall 2019, it might feel a bit like playing dress-up when you get ready to go out his season. Indulge the child-like wonder and bundle up in the trench coats and superhero capes, but be sure to pull it all together with the sophisticated simplicity of pearls, especially baroques. Harper’s Bazaar lists “statement pearls” as an “instant update,” with a word of caution that “Not all pearls are created equal. This season, baroque shapes, unique settings and major volume offer a whimsical take on the demure accoutrement.” We couldn’t agree more!
