Pearls Are in the Hair This Spring | And More Jewels We Love

Inspired by a particularly gala awards season, and an epic Fashion Month, we’ve developed a crush on hair jewels and accessories. Here, we take a look at pearls in the hair, statement necklaces, and earrings that are truly extra. Come along for the ride!

The headband is back and it’s no longer the province of “The Preppy Handbook.” Whether padded at Prada or pearl-studded at Simone Rocha (see top of page), jeweled headbands are must-haves on red carpets and runways alike. Hair jewelry is one of spring’s biggest trends, including pearl-embellished barrettes and glittering brooches pinned into topknots or on satin bows. Fans include Margot Robbie, Cardi B, Saoirse Ronan, Duchess Kate, Rachel Weisz, and Lupita Nyong’o (who started it all with her diamond headband at the 2014 Oscars). Try fastening an Assael South Sea pearl brooch or pearl earring in your chignon this season. The hair is the new accessories zone…don’t ignore it!

Statement Necklaces

In an interview with Moda Operandi, designer Wes Gordon was asked what words of wisdom Carolina Herrera had for him when he took over. Gordon replied that CH warned him, “Sometimes the bravest, most modern, most revolutionary thing to do is to be elegant.” Spring’s best statement necklaces are just that…elegant and elevated beyond trend to a timeless, glamorous status. A case in point was Laura Harrier’s tri-color gemstone choker on the 2019 Academy Awards red carpet. See also Assael’s South Sea Pearl and Aquamarine Necklace from the Color of Pearls Collection.

When it comes to earrings, the season’s most stunning examples are longer…but not too long. “We’re seeing more up-do’s, braids, and high ponytail hairstyles for spring and fall,” said Peggy Grosz, V.P. of Development for Assael, “Fashion girls are seeking a sleek, elongated earring to compliment the neck and hair.” Look for Assael’s pearl and gemstone drops, Tahitian stilettos, and responsibly sourced Angel Skin coral designs at the Couture jewelry show this May in Las Vegas.
