Fall 2019 Fashion Preview: Discreet Charms of the Haute Bourgeoisie
Now that we’ve all had a moment to reflect on the Fall 2019 collections, one thing seems certain: as we enter the new decade we’ll be dressing with optimal confidence and grace. Runway shows in New York, London, Milan and Paris celebrated exquisite tailoring, an emphasis on wearable separates, and power suiting that embraces real curves. Some fashion pundits are calling it “Discreet Chic” while others hail “Haute Bourgeoisie.” Whatever you call it, the Fall ‘19 fashion season promises to be worth your investment. Let’s explore three key trends.
SmartCoats
If you buy only one major look from the Fall-Winter collections, make it a new coat. Whether you choose cinched-at-the-waist coats, cape coats, open-robe styles, or military coats, this season outerwear has the inside track. See Tory Burch’s multicolored reefer, Celine’s camel cape, and JW Anderson’s jaunty plaids. These dramatic coats call for bold accessories: add a brooch to your lapel, or a pair of fiery Sardinian coral earrings with a matching ring…and make an entrance they won’t soon forget.
Suitability
Vogue says the best suits for fall are not “inspired by menswear.” We say, let’s strike that phrase from our fashion vocabulary! Fall’s strongest suits are designed for women by women: Clare Waight Keller at Givenchy, Maria Grazia Chiuri at Dior, and Victoria Beckham for her eponymous label. At Chanel, now helmed by Virginie Viard, one of Karl Lagerfeld’s last suit designs, in glorious winter white, glows with a chain-link belt and cascading necklaces with pearls. Consider accessorizing your new suits with a wide pearl cuff or pale pink Angel Skin coral strands and earrings. Simply heavenly.
A Separate Piece
Finally, somebody gets it: this is the way women want to get dressed. Perfectly crafted separates allow us to express our individuality and accessorize to our heart’s content. Cue the leather skirts, boots, and tweed jackets at Ferragamo, the classic culottes at Celine, and the layered neutrals at Fendi. Leading designers showed these versatile pieces with Baroque pearl earrings and single- or double-strand pearl chokers—all must-haves for the new decade of fashion…and beyond!
