In early December, international color authority Pantone announced that “Living Coral” is its choice for the 2019 Color of the Year. As it has done every year since 2000, Pantone’s COY selection committee gathered trends from the worlds of fashion and jewelry, home décor, technology, and social media, and pronounced that the color coral is thriving in the current zeitgeist. Ever since Priyanka Chopra dazzled the Met Gala in a Ralph Lauren trench coat gown, designers have gone mad for khaki, chino, camel, and classic beige fabrics. For Spring ’19, many, including Burberry, Brandon Maxwell, and Vera Wang, are showing neutral monochromatic daywear, deconstructed trenches, and tulle evening gowns in nearly nude colors. Mixing shades of coral—pinks to oranges to reds—will be a top priority for designers and fashion girls in 2019. Ulla Johnson’s luxe bohemian looks for spring mix brick-red skirts with coral peasant blouses, just right with a Sardinian Bubble Ring by Sean Gilson for Assael.
