Guest post #2 of 5 from Reema Farooqui @theculture Guest post #2 of 5 from Reema Farooqui @thecultureofpearls – As we explore India’s passion for pearls, the famed jewellery houses of Europe begin to play an essential role. European jewellery houses have a rich history of creating spectacular jewels inspired by or made for Indian royalty. The middle of the 19th Century saw Europe develop a fascination with Indian jewellery. London and Paris competed with each other to introduce new designs and innovative craftsmanship, inspired by Indian jewels. In the 1860s, the multistrand bead necklace, the “Colliers Indiens” became a fashion staple of Paris.
European high jewellery houses soon began to target Indian royalty, seeking to craft bespoke pieces for prominent Indian Maharajas, Princes and Nawabs. Cartier is possibly the most unforgettable. Charmed by western jewellery making techniques, as well as intrigued by the use of platinum, many of Cartier’s royal Indian clients readily commissioned the Maison to reset family heirlooms or to make custom jewels for them, often using gems from their own treasuries. Maharani Gayatri Devi of Jaipur (#2 in carousel), who ruled with her husband from 1940-49, wore a Cartier double strand pearl necklace. In the 1960s, Maharani Sita Devi of Baroda (#5 & #6) was often spotted in public wearing a Cartier pearl cuff bracelet.
Cartier was not the only European jeweller to cater to Indian royalty. Chaumet, Van Cleef & Arpels, Boucheron, and Mauboussin were all frequented regularly by Indian princes and princesses at Place Vendôme in Paris. Maharaj Kumar Rani Sita Devi of Kapurthala (Princess Karam #3), a muse for Italian fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli was a client of Boucheron and Cartier. Maharani Sanyogita of Indore (#8) was a famous client of Mauboussin. Sumptuous necklaces, turban ornaments rings, and bracelets alongside cigar accessories, powder compacts, candy tins, and wristwatches – all of these personalized pieces were produced by the prestigious Parisian Maisons for their royal Indian clientele.

Guest Post #1 of 5 from @thecultureofpearls–No g Guest Post #1 of 5 from @thecultureofpearls–No gem has been so prolifically woven into the fabric of India’s jewellery history as the Pearl. Moti (pearl), a precious, pure, versatile gem, has always been regarded as TREASURE. The Mughals, especially Jehangir and Shah Jahān (2nd in carousel) in the late 16th to mid 17th centuries, were the first Indian rulers to leave us rich, pictorial records of their love for pearls. Wearing pearls was not only an emblem of royalty, but also a privilege reserved exclusively for the Emperor, his family, the nobility. Strung into necklaces or set into turban ornaments, pearls held a special significance for Mughal royalty. Basra natural pearls from the Persian Gulf and pearls from as far away as the Gulf of Mexico were found in the Mughal treasuries.
After the decline of the Mughal Empire in the 18th century, the royal tradition of wearing fine pearls continued. Indian Maharajas and Nawabs wore ropes and ropes of natural pearls for state celebrations and ceremonial occasions – see Maharaja Jitendra Narayan of Cooch Behar (4th in carousel). As India opened up to the West, towards the end of the 19th Century, the royals started adopting strands of white pearls as their preferred style – see Maharani Indira Devi (5th in carousel) and Princess Durru Shehvar of Berar (7th in carousel). Pearl jewelry complemented the lifestyle of these modern royal consorts – women, who were stepping outside of the palace, becoming prominent personages in international high society and playing more active, philanthropic roles within their kingdoms.
